We all know that our nation has become a global leader in information technology and other high-tech fields such as pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and telecom-based business services. For the youth of this nation, a life more satisfactory than the present one is difficult to imagine as exciting opportunities beckon them from every corner of the globe. But in order to sustain this trend, and to ensure that India does not throw away its key advantage in the knowledge sector, it is imperative that we continue to produce a critical mass of highly skilled manpower at an accelerated pace.

Thus, education at every level remains crucial for continued growth. Though the output of technocrats and professionals is impressive in absolute terms, and has been a continuous source of economic strength, the nation cannot afford to become complacent as it may face acute shortage of skilled workers in the very near future.
